This important carved whalebone and mahogany octagonal four-tier spool rack was probably made in Nantucket circa 1850. It stands 8 1/4" high. PROVENANCE: Smithsonian Institute, Museum of American Folk Art, Sotheby's, the Barbara Johnson collection. Illlustrated in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and scrimshanders" published in 1972.
