A group of four beautifully framed 19th century color lithographs of Royal Navy ships

Very attractively framed in octagonal bird's eye maple frames, each measuring 15 1/4" by 13 1/4", with reverse painting on glass in gold and black. Thomas Dutton (1819-1891) was a famous British lithographer who specialized in ships and maritime scenes. The four lithos were published by Griffin & Co., of Portsmouth, England on August 1, 1872. The ships featured are HMS Captain built in 1870 for the Royal Navy which capsized in Sept. 1870 with the loss of nearly 500 lives; HMS Sultan, an ironclad battle ship built for the Royal Navy in 1867; HMS Northumberland, another ironclad warship built in 1870 and lastly, HMS Volage, a corvette built for the Royal Navy in 1869.
