A large scrimshawed Sperm Whale's Tooth depicting a Whaling hunt off the 'Feegee' Islands.

The 7 1/2" nicely shaped and patinated tooth weighs abount 1 1/4 pounds and is definitely 19th century. The scrimshaw is stylistically 19th century but to be conservative I am going to say that it may be 20th century and price the tooth based on that assumption. The whaling scene shows a whale ship with the "Feegee Islands" in the background. The ship is flanked by five whale boats, one being 'stoved' in by a sperm whale with all the whalers flying in the air. The reverse side of the tooth is inscribed "TAKEING WHALE: FEEGEE ISLS". Regardless of the possible age of the scriming, the tooth is wonderful and worthy of any scrimshaw collection.
