A RARE ANTIQUE SCRIMSHAW 19th century Sailor-Made Whalebone Mounted Mahogany Birdcage

This fine example closely resembles one in the Collections of the Nantucket Historical Society which is illustrated on p. 142 of "Scrimshaw, The Whaler's Legacy" by Martha Lawrence and published by Schiffer Publishing in 1993. PROVENANCE: The Ernest Gates Collection. Mr Gates was the curator of the JIBBOOM Club's Whaling Museum at New London, CT, during the 1930's through the 1950's. Many of Mr. Gate's pieces are now in the collections of the MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM. W 17 1/2" H 21" D 13".
