An Absolutely Amazing French Napoleonic War period Prisoner-of-War bone 'Spinning Jenny' circa 1795-1810

SOLD

This wonderful and rare example features an elaborate spinning wheel system on a platform with two women standing together wearing bonnets, their faces hand painted, a younger mother also standing behind a rocking cradle with a baby inside (which also rocks)and a bird cage (which rotates) with several hand colored birds inside. This was one of the earliest forms of automatons made by the French sailors captured by the British during the Naploeonic War (1795-1815). The bone came from their weekly meat rations which consisted primarily of beef bone (no meat). A very similar example is illustrated on page 181 of "The Arts and Crafts of Napoleonic and American Prisoners of War 1756-1816" published by Clive L. Lloyd.
