An exceptionally fine and important Nantucket covered basket purse made by the iconic basket maker Gladys Ellis circa 1970.

This absolutely outstanding example is in perfect untouched original condition. It was made by the famous scrimshander and creator of the "MATTAPOISETT" basket Gladys Ellis for her daughter Anne La Plante around 1970. It features a lid adorned with an ebony oval with three hand carved whale ivory depictions of sperm whales. It has a whalebone clasp and large willow swing handle. The interior of the lid has a whalebone plaque with the name "Anne La Plante."The basket measures 10" wide by 7" high and 7" deep. The single best example I have ever seen !!!
