An American sailor-made "Surprise" box circa 1860-1880

Absolutely charming!!. This wonderful little box measures 5" wide and stands 4" high. The box is made of burled wood inlaid with other fruitwoods and is edged with bone. On one side is a Federal shield inlaid with red and green colored wood, the other side with a compass rose surrounded by inlaid diamonds. The lid has a raised heart with an arrow going through it. When the lid is slid back, a green serpent with red eyes and mouth slides out.
