Portraits of French Naval commanders do not get better than this! Comte Truguet (1752-1839) sailed for America aboard 'Hector' and fought in the Battle of Savannah in September 1779 during which he saved the life of his captain. He served in several Naval battles during the american Revolution between 1780-1782. He was Naval Minister in the 1790's. During the restoration he was appointed Admiral. This painting is a version of a larger composition commissioned for the Palace des Tuileries in 1832. a replica of this painting is in the collection of the Musee de Versailles. This painting remained in the family until sold at Sotheby's in the 1990's. It is fitted into a fabulous period carved giltwood frame measuring 48" by 61".
