John Speed (1552-1629) was one of the most famous British mapmakers of the 17th century, and today is regarded as being one of the most collectable. He began selling maps of Great Britain as early as 1611 and this map entitled "Breknoke" is from his famous atlas entitled "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain" printed in 1610. It contained maps of the entire British Isles including all the Counties and it took nearly 15 years to assemble all the information contained in them. This fine original example has been museum matted and framed with the frame measuring 29" by 24".
