A beautiful pair of historic American polycromed Whale's Teeth circa 1851-1854

SOLD

The first tooth is engraved with a polycromed depiction of child prodigy "William Henry Marsh," a child musician known as the "Little Drummer." He was the rage of New York City in early 1851 when he performed there. His remarkable performance on the drums and comments on the unusually large crowds are to be found in the NY Daily Tribune in seven issues beginning Feb. 19, 1851. The reverse side has a lady wearing a fashionable dress of the period. The second tooth features Mrs. Anna cora Mowatt (1819-1870), American playwright, actress and poet. The reverse side features a dashing gentleman holding a book and wearing an unusual outfit, possibly Scottish or Italian (?). Both teeth measure 7" and each weigh 1 1/2 pounds and have a lovely untouched patina. These teeth can be dated to the 3 year period between 1851 when the Little Drummer appeared in NYC and 1854 when Mrs. Mowatt married Mr. Ritchie and changed her name to Mowatt-Ritchie.
