A Civil War era scrimshawed Whale's Tooth depicting the CSS 'Nashville' capturing and burning the 'Harvey Birch' circa 1861.

This wonderful scrimshawed whale's tooth depicts the CSS Nashville, a 1221 ton cruiser, on her first combat cruise under the Confederate Navy Flag, capturing and burning the sailing merchantman 'Harvey Birch' in the English Channel on November 19, 1861. Returning to American waters in 1862, she captured and burned the schooner 'Robert Gilfillan on Feb. 26, 1862. Two days later she ran the blockade into Beaufort, N.C., She was later sold and renamed the 'Thomas L. Wragg, and operated as a blockade runner. The scrimshaw is based upon a line engraving published in "The Soldier in Our Civil War." The reverse side of the tooth features a wonderful spread wing American eagle clutching a laurel wreath flanked by two heavy pieces of artillery and stands of cannon balls.
