This fine and rare 19th century American presentation walking stick has an eight sided ivory knob, most likely elephant ivory, with each side scrimed with different patriotic or nautical images. The first image is that of a sailor holding a telescope with crossed whaling irons at his feet. Next is an American spread wing eagle, followed by a furled American flag. The next panel has entwined serpents and next to it a navy fouled anchor engraved with the letters 'F J T' above it and 'Maker' below and a sextant below. The next panel has the name 'L. Retreat' in script followed by "L.G. Webster". The knob is mounted to a spiral twist ebony or dark rosewood shaft with numerous simulated rope turings. There are also two silver-mounted strap holes. Length: 38".
