A Temple-style Toggle-head Harpoon from the whaleship "Martha" circa 1857

The head is marked "JT % CO" for James (1768-1850) and Thomas Durfee (1795-1891) of New Bedford and was likely made around 1850. The opposite side is marked "S Martha" for the whaler Martha of Fairhaven. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Bob and Nina Hellman of Nantucket. A copy of the original receipt accompanies the harpoon. Length: 37.25"
