An Historic Civil War era scrimshawed Walrus Tusk circa 1863-1866

SOLD

This historic 16 1/2" tusk features a bust of Lt. John N. Maffitt, a sperm whale and a fully rigged ship. Maffitt was one of the most daring Rebel seamen of the Civil War and was the first Captain of the CSS Florida, one of the most feared ships of the entire Civil War. I was able to borrow from a friend an actual Civil War period CDV of Lt. Maffitt which was similar to the one used by the scrimshander to get the likeness of Maffitt. Clearly the sailor who scrimed this tusk was sympathetic to the Southern cause. NOTE: This tusk appears to have been scrimed by the same person who scrimed two other walrus tusks illustrated on p. 30 of Norman Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders." Condition: The tip was cut off long ago and there is a small piece missing at the base. Otherwise, a very attractive and historic piece of sailor scrimshaw.
