Antique Sailor-Made Whale Tooth Mounted Fid With Steel Point

Having a polished 4" whale tooth as a handle and a knife or sword shaped 5" double-edged (unsharpened) steel blade, this instrument may have served as both a tool as well as knife or dirk for self-defense. Clearly sailor-made and dating to the 1840's or 1850's.
