Fine and Large 19th Century Scrimshawed Whale's Tooth Circa 1830

SOLD

This large sperm whale's tooth is the real thing! It was scrimshawed by a sailor in the first half of the nineteenth century who depicted a whaling hunt with a harpooned whale flowing red blood in the fore ground. The reverse of the tooth is plain having never been scrimshawed. The overall length is 7 1/2" with the weight approximately two pounds. Two small mounting holes were drilled many years ago on the top edge of the tooth but they do not detract from the overall quality and beauty of this tooth.
