Historic American Carved Whale's Tooth Commemorating Patriot Joseph Warren circa 1850

SOLD

This fine historic 19th century antique American sperm whale's tooth depicts the Bunker Hill monument flanked by a portrait bust of Joseph Warren below a banner inscribed 'WARREN.' The reverse shows a stylized American flag and a small seated figure above a fruiting vine lattice over a female allegorical figure wearing a crown of laurel leaves, her right hand atop a globe surmounting an American shield. The images have been heightened by the use of red pigment. Note: Joseph Warren was a Harvard educated and trained Doctor and was one of the leading figures in the cause of liberty. He was a senior officer in the Colonial Militia at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War and in official command of the forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was killed early in the battle and was the first officer to lose his life in that war.
