An Historically Important GEORGE WASHINGTON signed Document of the Society of the Cincinnati, dated October 31, 1785 and signed at Mount Vernon.

The document was signed by Washington while at Mount Vernon on October 31, 1785. It announces that William Butler was elected a member of the Society. The Society was a patriotic organization with strict entrance rules; only officers from the Continental or French armies who had served three years during the Revolutionary War, or were officers at the time of the war's end, were allowed entrance. After that, membership was passed down to the eldest son. Washington served as the Society's first president, while Henry Knox served as its secretary, later to become the Secretary of War under Washington. The document was backed with linen probably in the late 18th or early 19th century and is in overall fine condition. It has recently been achivally matted with a museum quality frame and UV protected glass. Overall measurements: 24" by 30"
